Adult Mental Health inpatient suites to become Star Wards!

Acute adult mental health suites in Grimsby have signed up to an innovative scheme to improve patient experience.

Diamond and Sapphire suites at the Diana Princess of Wales Hospital have signed up to ‘Star Wards’, a project which provides practical ideas for improving the daily experiences and treatment outcomes of acute mental health inpatients.

As part of the initiative, the suites can choose from a collection of 75 practical ideas (or use their own ideas) including structured exercise classes such as Thai Chi, DVD nights and themed days linked to cultural events.

Ellie Walsh, Ward Manager of Diamond Suite said: “The average stay of a patient on one of our suites is 19 days and therefore it is vital that during their stay patients are supported and are offered activities to relieve the boredom sometimes associated with being in hospital.  Some of the first changes that will be implemented will be a pamper room for both suites, Guinea pigs as pets on Diamond Suite and comedy nights.

“As part of the initiative we are also looking for volunteers to help make peoples stay as pleasant as possible.  The sorts of things we would like volunteers to help with include people who could come and visit patients who have no visitors and carers who have no support, people who could offer things such as creative writing, singing, reflexology and Indian head massage.  If you have a few hours a month to spare and would be willing to help please call Vicky Ayres on (01472) 302420 (volunteers will need to be police checked which Mental Health services will arrange).

” Star Wards was set up by Marion Janner, following her experiences as an acute inpatient.  Following her visit to Grimsby, Marion said: “I was deeply impressed by my visit to Diamond and Sapphire suites. While it was excellent to learn about the imaginative programme of patient activities throughout the day, 7 days a week, the most heartening feature was the warmth, responsiveness and professionalism of each member of staff. It's a perpetually challenging environment to work in, and the staff with amazing flexibility and kindness.”
