A drop-in session is taking place tomorrow in which people can find out more information about choosing a hospital and booking hospital appointments.
From April 2008, if a GP refers a patient to hospital, they are able to choose to go anywhere in England where their care is funded by the NHS. This includes NHS hospitals and some Department of Health approved independent (private) hospitals.
Once patients have chosen a hospital, they can either book an appointment on the spot in the GP surgery or later on the phone or via the internet at a time that is more convenient to them.
Julie Wilson, Senior Commissioning Manager, said:
“Traditionally, when your GP decided you need to see a specialist, they write a letter and the hospital allocates a date and time. It can be several weeks before you receive your appointment and the date offered may not suit you.
“This system gives you a choice of where and when it suits you to be treated, so you can fit your hospital appointment in with your life, not the other way round.”
Julie continued.
“The reason for running this session is to make more people aware that they have a choice of hospital (if they wish) and I would encourage as many people as possible to come along, pick up a leaflet and ask any questions they may have.”
The open drop in session is taking place on: Wednesday 28th May 2 - 4pm Grimsby Central Library
