Dementia patients with complex needs can now be treated locally thanks to a new development by North East Lincolnshire Care Trust Plus.
The new eleven bedded Haverstoe Suite is a self-contained unit at the Huntleigh Lodge care home at Cleethorpes. The unit is providing bespoke care for people with dementia who would otherwise have had to be placed outside the district. The Haverstoe Suite has its own separate entrance and provides 11 single bedrooms, many of which are en-suite. Specially designed to provide dementia friendly facilities, the unit has a spacious dining room, lounge and activity area and a dedicated sensory garden with a pets’ corner and greenhouse.
Jeanette Logan, Head of Older People’s Mental Health Services for North East Lincolnshire Care Trust Plus said,
“The CTP has been working for some time to develop a local service for people with dementia who have complex needs. From previous experience of placing people outside the county, we know that this has caused problems for the individual themselves and undue pressure and anxiety for carers, families and friends trying to maintain relationships and provide important continuity of care. Being able to now provide this service locally is a huge step forward and brings all round benefits.”
The Care Trust Plus had tendered for a local service to be provided and HICA was successful in its bid to develop the specialised unit.
Mrs Logan added: “This has provided a unique and exciting opportunity to work in partnership from the outset of the development of this new social care model. It is a much needed service which requires us to transcend existing boundaries between health and social care services, and provides a service for people with dementia and their carers to make a difference of living well with dementia.”
